Why does this matter?
This indicator ensures that tourism supports cultural preservation in a responsible and meaningful way.
What does it take into account?
It checks whether the tour actively promotes and protects cultural heritage.
For guided tours, it looks at:
- Whether cultural activities are included.
- Whether they are led or co-led by local knowledge holders.
- Whether tourists actively participate.
For self-guided tours, it checks whether the tour:
- Provides information about cultural sites and their importance.
- Offers guidance on visiting them.
- Includes guided options where relevant.
- Provides a code of conduct for cultural or historical places.
How is this calculated?
The method depends on the type of tour.
For guided tours:
- Cultural activities are checked.
- The number led by local knowledge holders is evaluated.
- Tourist participation is assessed.
These elements are scored and added together.
For self-guided tours:
- Each cultural requirement is marked Yes or No.
- The number of "Yes" answers is counted to create a total score for the tour.
In both cases, the results are converted into a final score from 0 to 5 using fixed ranges. The stronger the cultural involvement and protection, the higher the score.
