A.1.2. Water Footprint

A.1.2. Water Footprint
A.1.2. Environmental Pillar - Environmental Performance

Why does this matter?

Water scarcity is a major challenge, especially in Southern European countries like Portugal, where water availability varies seasonally. Tourism should not put additional stress on local water supplies.

How is it calculated?

It totals the water used in accommodation and activities, calculates the average litres per tourist per day, and then compares this value to a benchmark to assign a score from 0 to 5.

What takes into account?

  • Accommodation: Uses actual meter data or estimates water use by multiplying nights and tourists by a proxy value - 220 L/night/guest (without pool or spa) or 439 L/night/guest (with pool or spa).
  • Activities: Uses actual water volumes provided for tour activities or estimates by multiplying tourists by a proxy value.
Benchmark: 300 L (per participant, per day)
0-176 L
5. Excellent
176-220 L
4. Very Good
220-264 L
3. Good
264-308 L
2. Satisfactory
308-351 L
1. Poor
>351 L
0. Very Poor
Efficient consumption

Very low water use per tourist per day, reflecting strong water-saving practices.

Better than average

Better than average tourist accommodation in Portugal. Water use is clearly below standard consumption levels.

Standard nature hotel level

Water use is within the average for tourist accommodation in Portugal.

Water use

Water use shows limited efficiency measures.

High consumption

The tour has low efficiency measures on water use.

Very high consumption

Water use is excessive and comparable to high-intensity luxury operations, requiring significant improvement.
